I was trained in ToP facilitation methods over a year ago and have had little practice since then. I have recently been asked to facilitate the first of several community meetings with a Blue Ribbon Commission that was started in response to disproportionate and rising numbers of African American child deaths in a California county. Needless to say and given recent media attention around poor Trayvon Martin's untimely and unfortunate slaying, this community is fired up. My understanding from conveners of this community forum is that local leaders, hospital staff etc have been invited to partner with the county to come up with a list of "recommendations" for the local interagency stakeholders to do in order to see these numbers change dramatically. I think a combination of consesus building and focused conversations would be great, I just need some suggestions on how not to walk into a public slaying as a facilitator! Any thoughts or models that have been used before around a topic as sensitive and emotion-evolking would be so helpful...This is the first of what I am suggesting be at least several meetings. I have 2 hours in the first.
Do you find this valuable?

I did a consensus vision workshop recently that had 13 columns. In my experience 13 columns is way too many to remember well. I did the usual of trying to cluster the columns and come up with supra-titles for each cluster of titles. The first cluster was easy and the rest just did not work. Someone later suggested what I might have tried is to ask the group to come up with 3-5 short phrases or sentences that would hold the vision for them.
What have you done in this situation? |

Being a recent convert to the idea mapping from the Workshop Book, I found in a recent workshop that participants put all sorts of ideas up but would it be advisable to guide participants that they should write the idea down with some structure? For example "verb plus idea" or "verb plus the end goal". What has been your experience?
