Thank you, Larry, for your great descriptions of the personal planning process and the obstacles workshop.
ICA Associates uses a focused conversation at the resolve level of the obstacles workshop to help get to a deeper understanding of the underlying contradiction. O. Read the cards in the cluster out loud. R. What key words on the cards jump out at you? I. Explore the underlying contradiction that all the cards in this cluster are pointing to. (List what people say on the flipchart until there begins to be repetition.) D. Summarize the underlying contradiction in a phrase. John Miller came up with a really good grammatical form for the phrase that helps people go deeper: Block, How it blocks, What it blocks. (Simple example: Hierarchy stifles creativity) Then test the phrase: Is it real / does it exist? Do we participate in keeping it alive? Can we do something about it? If it doesn't pass these tests, keep working. Since using this detailed process, I find it much easier for the group to name real underlying contradictions. What other tips or insights do people have for participatory strategic planning? Jo |

In working with a large company, I discovered that some of the action plans had missed the real intent of the strategy. The plans seemed to more reflect certain comfort zones rather than the new edge. What to do?
What I am trying is this. I drafted a set of 3-5 sentences per strategy that stated what I thought the intent of the strategy was. I tried to capture the edge or real strategic aspect of the strategy. I have run it past my contact person and on Monday we are taking it to the Senior Management Team for their input. The CIO thinks it is a good idea as he wants to make sure we don't lose the edge that the planning had in it - something that is really easy to do when you get back to the regular daily work load. It will also help when other people who were not at the session get involved. |

While doing a Strategic planning, we reported on the results of an employee survey done in preparation for the planning session. I had taken all the information and grouped and named it so participants could see the themes in the midst of all the data.
After the offsite planning session, we have decided to take all the information from the session and plot it on the charts from the session -- to see if anything had been missed or not emphasized. This exercise is being done next week. We already know a few areas that appear to be missing. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. I will let you know. |
